Naples

Stuff we have seen and done:

• Pompeii (from Naples about 15 miles South): History Bite: Destroyed in 79AD (the same year the Colosseum was finished) when a nearby volcano (Vesuvius) erupted covering it in ash and debris. Ruins were discovered in the 16th century by architect Domenico Fontana.

• Herculaneum – rediscovered in the 18th century and buried around the same time as Pompeii. It is worth visiting along with Pompeii.
• Catacombs of San Gennaro
• We just wanted to eat and try the food around Naples but we learnt that you do pay for each item you use, so be mindful.

Off the beaten path: 

• Fontanelle Cemetary: History Bite: Beneath the heat and bustle of Naples’s streets is an old quarry that became a burial site in the 17th century when a plague wiped out 250,000 of the city’s residents. Though the Fontanelle cemetery’s piles of bones are undeniably unnerving, the local tradition of caring for a lost soul’s skull lends the place a very spiritual feel.
• Lungomare – a seafront road that provides a great view of Vesuvius, Capri and Naples.
• Via dei Tribunali – on this street the best pizza in the world (so they say) at Sorbillo. And if you can be patient and wait in the line, you will agree too.

Parking:

• There is a camping site right across the road where we parked for the day, from the ruins of Pompeii, it’s great, it’s a campsite and we even did our washing there. Pay whatever for the day rate and walah – Parking.
