Cairo

Interesting things about Cairo:

  • There is a lot of car beeping all through the night because of the millions of people still driving all night long. Don’t sleep in the city by any main road. I could not sleep all night.
  • Cairo comes alive at around 10pm and markets begin popping up, everywhere. There is always food and people – lots of them.
  • There is a lot of smoking houses and smoking in a lot of places so be mindful. I felt like choking most of the time.
  • The people are super friendly and there is a lot of food stalls all over the place AND as a warning they use their HANDS. So if you have an issue with it, you might have to go to a restaurant or go hungry.

Stuff we have seen and done:

  • Night Markets – are fantastic in Cairo. It is so busy at 10pm onwards as if its peak hour. So many people but very interesting handmade crafts, such as jewellery and things which is what I love to buy the most.
  • Cairo Tower – it has an amazing view of the city and right below the tower is just a bustling market.

  • Saqqara – Step Pyramid of Djoser: History Bite: It is south by 20 miles or so of Cairo. Built during the third dynasty and home to Egypt’s oldest Pyramid. Architect was Imhotep for Djoser and is a great feet of engineering on his part.

Places we stayed:

  • El Tahrir Hotel – we stayed here as it use to be directly across from the Egyptian Museum, but as I mentioned above, I could not get any sleep for the beeping. But if it doesn’t bother, this was a very nice hotel and convenient.
  • Royal Pyramid Inn – this was a decent hotel but it is very close to Giza Plateau, a camel ride away they say and food stalls on the street. It is close to the Nile and across from Karnak and Luxor. This is a perfect location and hotel for everything. The bonus it has is it has a roof top where at night you can sit and enjoy the night show of the Pyramids which is amazing, amazing.
